What were teaching children to read the Word of God

Writer's picture: Grace WickGrace Wick

I have spent the las many years teaching the Bible to children. Any of my students will tell you that I always tell them how important it is for them to read their Bibles. I can talk about it a lot and have even taken stabs at making student's read their Bibles. I have said it over and over but seldom actually empowered kids to read the word of God. But somehow this seems to be something that we expect them to do when they grow up, but not actually do when they are still children. We think, I guess, that the Bible is too complicated for them to understand. How foolish are we.

Jesus tell us that his wisdom is not for the wise and learned but understandable to a child.

Matthew 11:25-30

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We are foolish if we will not teach our children to read the Bible. We must teach them while they are young enough to make it a life-long habit. We must not tell them that someday when they grow up they will be wise enough to understand the word of God. They may see things differently than an adult but they are able to understand the word of God. They may just believe what Jesus says better than we skeptical adults will. To not teach them to read and interact with the word of God is the reason our children will not want anything to do with God when they are older. And God forbid that we are guilty of that sin.

Please find a simple Bible reading plan and follow it with your children. Or follow my blog and read along with me as we journey through scripture. Right now we are reading a chapter a day and we are in the middle of John.

Reading for August 13 John 15

14 John 16

15 John 17

16 John 18

17 John 19

18 John 20

19 John 21

Prayerfully read the chapter assigned on a daily basis then using the acrostic WORD journal on what you have read

W- Word -choose a verse or two from what you have read and write the verse in a notebook

O- Observation - make observations; what does the verse say. How does the context help you understand what it means. Look up and think about any words you may not fully understand

R- Revelation - listen as you write what these verses look like in your life. This is the application part of the process where you write what this looks like in your life.

D- Devotion write your personal prayer

A chapter a day is manageable. If we have a steady diet of God's word, we will be effective in our walks with the Lord and grow to be more like Christ.

Blessings to my readers
